5th Grade - 8th Grade
Students in the Preparatory Division, Fifth Grade through Eighth Grade, begin to assume increasing levels of independent responsibility for their learning. Each student is assigned a class advisor who supports them both individually and as part of small groups as they make section and subject choices. With the introduction of formalized subjects including English, Math, History, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Science and Research Skills, students continue to develop effective reading, writing and analytical skills with specialized teachers for each subject. This continues as well in more familiar subjects such as Music, Fine Arts, Drama, Alternate Languages and Wellness/Athletics. French and Spanish are optional as literature classes but students in the Preparatory Division are required to study Mandarin. In addition, students have the opportunity to play intramural and competitive sports with other schools in the area.
Music and drama will remain part of the core curriculum through Eighth Grade. By combining the values of good citizenship and the bond of theatrical ensemble the students are encouraged to create musical and dramatic productions of their own. By the time our students reach Fifth Grade they have the skills necessary to write, direct, produce and perform sophisticated productions. In support of this, the Kindergarten-Eighth Grade Facility houses a professional grade black box theater with fully computerized audiovisual components as well as a state of the art computerized lighting system. Students become involved in all areas of production, not just performance. Students have the opportunity to write, direct, design and create all elements of the production including lighting, sound, set construction, and costumes.
Group and individualized assignments are designed to foster each student's skills and interests. Reading and mathematics specialists are available to provide enrichment and support as determined by the students, their advisors and their families.
Community service is an important part of student life at the Mandell School. A year-long community service project is a recurring curriculum unit from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.
All Preparatory Division students are in small advisement groups and all conferences are held with the Head Teacher, parents and child. Teachers and specialists are available at all times via e-mail or phone. A full roster of after school programs is available to these grades including drama, art, alternate languages, music, musical instrument instruction, orchestra, chorus, photography and sports.
