The Mandell School Library is a learning environment designed to foster literacy and a lifelong love of books. It also strives to teach the students the importance of borrowing and returning and borrowing again. With over 7,000 books, the Mandell library is the largest pre-school library in New York City. Our collection of books range from simple board books for the very young to chapter books for the elementary ages. They are filed by subject matter ranging from the solar system, transportation, science, rain forests, dinosaurs and storybooks to name a few. In addition, the library has a collection of early reader books that the older children are introduced to in Pre-K II. It also contains a number of series such as the Magic Tree House books, which are suitable for the elementary grades.
Since most of the children are not readers yet, in a typical library session Mrs. Rowe, the Head of School Emeritus who also oversees the library program, will ask a child what kind of book they are interested in and find an age appropriate edition for the student. After all the children have selected a book she reads a story. There is a close link between the library curriculum and classroom studies.
