At the end of the school day Mandell students are invited to participate in one or more of our Firefly Program workshops. These workshops are organized in six one-hour or two-hour sessions, Monday through Friday, and span a six-week period during each fall, winter and spring term. Most are limited to no more than eight children, however, the enrollment may be expanded for older groups.
Firefly Workshops are taught by Mandell teachers who design their lessons and have special talents and interests in the areas they choose to teach. The workshops are stimulating and diverse. Our art workshops are taught by artists who have knowledge and experience in the areas of drawing, painting and sculpture. Chess class is supervised by lovers of the game who guide the application of higher level thinking skills as children apply planning and execute strategies while learning to play this challenging game. Science lessons encompass activities ranging from cooking and chemistry to physics as the children learn to make soup and bake muffins, build volcanoes, grow crystals and experiment with closed circuits. Our preschool photography workshop incorporates math ideas as the children search for and photograph patterns, sets, sizes, shapes and numbers in the world around them. Nursery II through Kindergarten children are invited to enroll in these exciting workshops and the Firefly roster of classes grows each term.
