Mandell Kindergarten students have an annual non-competitive Read-A-Thon to raise funds for Pratham USA.
Pratham USA is a non-profit organization working to educate underprivileged children in urban and rural areas across 21 states in India.
Almost half of the children in India are illiterate, making Pratham's focus pre-school and primary education.
For the Mandell Read-A-Thon books are read in the classroom in small and large groups and are tallied together on one classroom chart.
Parents organize donations from sponsors for the number of books the children read.
The Mandell Kindergarten class raised over $3,300 in 2009, the first year of this annual event.
This money will provide over 130 children in India an education for one full year.
