The Drama Program

The objectives of the Mandell drama program are to teach vital theater skills and foster a love and appreciation for the art form. Mandell students have use of a professional grade black box theater with fully computerized audiovisual components, as well as a state of the art computerized lighting system.

Age-appropriate and inclusive material is selected based on the school’s values as a community. Beginning in the Lower School, students explore dramatic play through movement and storytelling. Ensemble, character, and relationships are the focus of class work, ultimately culminating in grade-level productions. Interdisciplinary collaboration allows students to gain new perspectives on their academic curriculum through performance. The Upper School drama program hones previously learned skills and applies them to public speaking and technical theatre & design, then expands to improvisation and scene study. All of this sets the foundation for students to take ownership of their creative voice, evolving into the next generation of theatre artists.
